Work-Life Balance Means What Exactly?

The concept of Work-life balance is tricky, to say the least.

Work-life balance is actually defined as “the amount of time you spend doing your job compared with the amount of time you spend with your family and doing things you enjoy. “

This definition, to me at least, has always seemed fundamentally problematic. It assumes that work and personal life never intersect.

In the real world, we know that our businesses and our families don’t live in separate apartments. When you’re passionate about what you do for a living it often comes home with you. And many of our pharmacy customers are family owned, family run businesses. RMS’ very own founder & CEO, Brad Jones, grew up in his parents pharmacy.

So if we’re to trust the generally accepted rules of work/life balance… pretty much everyone I know is failing miserably. I don’t think for a second that’s a bad thing.

Where does that leave us?

We still do need balance in our lives. Even when we love what we do every day, we need time to reset. To step away from the things we must do and do something just for the sake of joy.

I’d propose that work-life balance for pharmacies actually means being able to enjoy our jobs. Finding ways to streamline time consuming processes where we can and delegating where it makes sense. That way, at the end of the day, you don’t have to find time for people you love and activities you enjoy. Build a pharmacy business that runs with your life, instead of building your life around your pharmacy business.

Now just because we’ve redefined work-life balance a little bit, doesn’t really make it any easier. Just when we think we have everything figured out, something changes.

Now what?

Normally, right about now, I’d share some tips on how to optimize pharmacy operations so that you don’t have to spend as much time on the parts of pharmacy business that maybe aren’t so enjoyable. Like compiling reports, or prepping for and audit, or running time-consuming inventory processes. Instead focusing on patient care, profitability and business growth.

Today, however, I’m keeping it short and sweet. That’s because just a few short hours from the publication of this post, we’ll be launching the first CLIMB virtual event – LIVE!

So I’m going to leave it to the experts, who’ll share how you can achieve your pharmacy profitability and customer-centricity goals through 5 core concepts. Care, lead, innovate, motivate and… BALANCE. Joining us for the presentation with a focus on the juggling act that we all perform between work life and life life is the Chief Wondermaker himself, Giovanni Livera.

If you’re catching this email on October 22nd anytime before 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern, Register for the event and tune in. Giovanni is our last speaker of the day, so even if you just catch 15 minutes, it will be well worth it.

And if you missed it, don’t worry. You can catch session recordings after the event at www.rm-solutions.com/climblibrary. If you’re registered you’ll get an email when the recordings are available, and first dibs on seats for our next event!
